When his parents send him to remote Mobray Island for a summer with his curmudgeonly grandfather, bookish Kell thinks his time is going to be a boring bust.
But he and his boisterous sister Grace are quickly drawn into events from the island’s past—The Pig War of 1859. What was The Pig War? Did pigs actually fight? What if Kell and Grace are caught with the buried revolver they've uncovered? And why does their grandfather go fishing without his fishing gear?
By summer’s end Kell learns that Mobray Island holds more adventure than he bargained for shady ancestors, shadier neighbors, and even some discoveries about himself.
The Pig War eBook Mark Holtzen
The Pig War is sheer delight. The nostalgic, carefree joy snuck up on me, and I could not put the book down. After reading it myself, I passed it along to my son, who also devoured it.I loved the characters. Kell is sensitive, curious, awkward, sweet. I wanted to hug him. Grace is the more overtly-lovable, fun-loving, fearless sister who alternately annoys Kell and draws out Kell's fierce big-brother protectiveness and admiration. Anyone with a younger sibling will be able to relate to the poignant ambivalence of that sibling relationship. The grandfather is slow to reveal himself to his grandchildren and to the reader, and yet when he does reveal himself, he captures one's heartstrings as much as do Kell and Grace. As Kell longed for his grandfather's acceptance and attention, I felt his longing as my own. As the uneasiness between Kell and his grandfather warms, I felt that child-like relief along with Kell.
My son loved the plot. He effused that the book is "amazing and adventurous and has a mystery and history." It has sparked some subtle-yet-powerful conversations about fighting, war, bravery, and even safety and independence.
Perhaps this is because the plot evoked something else in me - nostalgia for child-created summer adventures. This summer, after reading The Pig War, I am intentionally allowing boredom to seep into my children's previously-overscheduled days. It seems an underrated (maybe even unfashionable?) life skill to be able to entertain one's self, particularly without structured guidance from school or camps or lessons. And as Kell and Grace demonstrate, creating one's own fun and adventure inspires growth... and simple joy.
You and your child will relish this book.

The Pig War eBook Mark Holtzen Reviews
My kids and I loved the Pig War. It was funny, informative, suspenseful and a great read. The characters are endearing and the story is sweet. We would highly recommend this book.
I'll join the other reviewers in giving this book five stars based on the lively, fast-moving plot and the sensitive character development. The characters in this engaging story ring true--although they struggle along the way, they all learn to care about each other in the end, giving an over-all positive conclusion to the book. Readers will find humor, adventure, and history as they are swept along with the action to an exciting rescue and a mystery-solving ending.
To be honest, I ordered this book for two reasons
1. I've never had a book with my maiden name on it.
2. It brought what I had in my cart over $25 and that gave me free shipping.
I was beginning to think that Stephen King was the only one who really understood 10 year old children, but I can see you do as well.
I was an elementary school teacher in my first career and I think these kids would have loved your book. It really belongs in every school library. It has humor, adventure, care for relationships, and historical interest.
You need to keep writing. Let me know when your next book is published.
The Pig War is a sweet predictable story of a young teen, Kell, who is determined to be mopey and unhappy the whole time he is forced to live with the eccentric grandfather he has never met. With his parents stuck in South America, Kell and his sister are sent to their grandfather's home on a small remote island in northern WA. Kell was unhappy to start with, but when he discovers that the island lacks most of the electronic, cultural and athletic activities he loves, he becomes grumpy and uncooperative. Kell's little sister, Grace, is his exact opposite. Grace lives for new experiences. She sees everyday as a new adventure and every person as a potential new friend. While they are exploring the island, Kell falls upon a mystery - a very old gun hidden in a hole, and hidden in a shed, a diary written by a soldier in the late 1800's. The diary refers to a local war with Canada that Kell has never heard of or learned about in school. With nothing else to do, Kell decides he is going to solve the mystery of the gun and the diary. Did they belong to the same person? Who? Why are they hidden? What war? Careful middle grade readers will be able to predict many of the events including the crisis. Even so, when it comes, it is a tense and memorable event. Readers will also find all of the characters likeable even the bullies next door and weird grandpa. The pace of the story may be a little slow for reluctant readers, but the interesting characters may hold their attention.
There's a little something for everyone in this novel. It's an adventure story, a mystery novel, and a coming of age story wrapped up in one. It initially appealed to me because of its setting in the beautiful San Juan Islands, a place I vacationed with my family as a little girl. However, I found I could really relate to the protagonist Kell, a realist and a skeptic, who is stuck spending the summer there with his little sister and crotchety grandfather. While I could relate to Kell, I was completely enchanted by the younger sister Grace, a girl with incredible spunk and chutzpah. I found myself unwilling to let these characters go when this book ended. I can't wait to read Holtzen's next novel!
